Introduction

The Pansori Museum was opened in 2001 to honor the achievements of Shin Jae-hyo, who revitalized the art of pansori (a traditional Korean musical storytelling genre). In 2005, it was registered as a Type 1 specialized museum.

With a land area of 5,525.5㎡ and a building area of 1,433㎡, the museum exhibits a total of over 1,480 items, including Shin Jae-hyo's personal belongings, renowned artists from the Gochang region, and materials related to pansori.

The exhibition halls are divided into five spaces, including the Sound Courtyard and Aniri Courtyard. The Sound Courtyard showcases the origins of pansori, demonstration models, and the genealogy of pansori, while the Aniri Courtyard introduces the Gochang region and its famous artists such as Shin Jae-hyo, Jin Chae-seon, and Kim So-hee. There are also many rare exhibits, including lyric books, recordings, books related to traditional Korean music, and more. In the Performance Courtyard, visitors can experience playing the buk (a traditional Korean drum) and bukchae (drumsticks) to mimic the sound while watching a video. In the Screening Courtyard, movies related to sound can be enjoyed.

On the second floor of the museum, there are a planning exhibition hall and a resource room. The museum site used to be the location of Shin Jae-hyo's house, and currently, the Sarangchae (Love House) of Gochang Shin Jae-hyo's House has been moved to the right side of the museum. In the Experience Room, visitors can learn how to play the buk while listening to various pansori performances such as "Chunhyangga" and "Sugungga." In the Art Gallery, visitors can appreciate around 130 works of fine art, including celadon and white porcelain, as well as calligraphy. The museum also serves as a venue for traditional Korean music performances and holds award ceremonies in the fields of academic contributions, pansori, and masters.

The Pansori Museum aims to collect, preserve, investigate, research, exhibit, and interpret various forms and intangible materials related to pansori. It provides the general public with opportunities for high-quality education and appreciation of pansori art and ultimately strives for the promotion and recognition of pansori as a cultural heritage.
