Introduction

There are various theories about the construction period of Gochang Eupseong (Gochang Fortress). However, based on the inscriptions found on the gates and various documents and stone tablets, it is evident that the fortress was constructed from the 32nd year of King Sejong of Joseon (1450) to the first year of King Danjong (1453), with contributions from 19 counties and districts in Jeolla Province. Among the inscriptions, there are traces of "Mujang Shimyeon" and "Mujang Jong," indicating the involvement of Mujanghyeon (a military unit) in the construction. In addition, there is an inscription on the eastern gate wall that reads "Gyuyu Socuk Gamdong Song Jimin" which, when interpreted, suggests that Gochang Eupseong was built in the year of Gyuyu, and Mujanghyeon participated in its construction.

The records about Gochang Eupseong first appeared in "Shinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam" (Newly Revised Survey of the Geography of the Eastern Kingdom) in the section on Gochang Hyunseong (Gochang County Fortress). Although "Shinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam" was published in the 25th year of King Jungjong (1530), only the two characters "Shinjeung" are shown in the revised edition, so it can be compressed that the construction period refers to before the 17th year of King Seongjong (1484), when Kim Jongjik and others made the second revision of "Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam." Mujanghyeon was established by integrating Musonghyeon and Jangsa-hyeon in the 17th year of King Taejong (1417), so the Gyuyu year of Geyuso Chuk refers to a year after 1417. Therefore, it can be confirmed that Gochang Eupseong was built in the Gyuyu year of 1453.

Gochang Eupseong continues to hold the Dapseong Hae-sa (Fortress Stepping Ceremony) every year due to the legend that stepping on the stones of the fortress leads to a long life without illness and to the paradise gate in the afterlife. It is believed that the stepping ceremony is most effective during the leap month of the lunar calendar, especially in March. Among them, Yeoran (March) 4th, which is called "Yeotsaetnal," is considered the day when the afterlife gate opens, and the Dapseong procession reaches its peak on this day. It is said that stepping around the fortress once cures minor illnesses, twice ensures longevity, and three times leads to entering paradise. During the stepping ritual, people must place a stone the size of their palm on their heads and turn around three times, and a designated area is set up to collect these stones. The emphasis on the effectiveness of the third month of the lunar calendar was probably intended to strengthen and solidify the fortress by stepping on it with increased weight on the head.
